  • Circular - Print Media SA 2009 - 01[Media Accreditation ]

    • 16h00, Thursday
      10th September
      2009

As you may be aware, meetings concerning accreditation issues for the industry have been taking place over the last few months.  A joint working group has been established and is constituted of Print Media SA, South African National Editors Forum, South African Press Association, Online Publishers Association, NAB, and Magazine Publishers Association under the guidance of the News Media Coalition.  The task team has provisionally named itself the SAMIG (South African Media Interest Group).

The purpose of this joint working group is to ensure that the right and duty of the media to report any and all matters of public interest, freely and without interference, is guaranteed and defended at all times.  The core objectives of SAMIG are to seek:

    • Curb unreasonable editorial, commercial or digital media restrictions being imposed upon the Media.
    • To work with event organisers to help them effectively manage their relationship with the media
    • To promote consensus and avoid conflicts
    • Accreditation agreements for events which are negotiated and agreed in advance and are in harmony with the needs of the Media

With the ICC Champions Trophy 2009 coming up, the NMC has on discussions with the ICC agreed on certain conditions including:

    • Material can be distributed to mobile devices, audio visual subject to ICC news access regulations
    • Editorial use in print would not be restricted to 'news sections'
    • The rule banning content being created in newsrooms is waived, with fair-use of stills 'video grabs' of broadcast footage away from location, unrestricted
    • There will be no numerical or timing limits on updating websites
    • A desire to encourage media coverage rather than limit newspaper or news agency publishing or news distribution
    • Without changing the existing wording, said accreditation would not be revoked unless in extreme cases.

To this end, we are advised by the NMC that journalists and photographers should go ahead and apply for accreditation for this sporting event. Click here to view the complete ICC terms and conditions.

We will keep you informed of any further developments and/or media accreditation matters for Cricket South Africa, FIFA and other major events.

    Regards,

    MS I LOUW
    CEO: PRINT MEDIA SA

  • Training for Newspaper Managers

    • 09h00, Tuesday
      25th August
      2009

Rhodes University's Sol Plaatje Institute for Media Leadership invites newspaper managers to participate in a five-day seminar focusing on integrated strategies for managing key elements in newspaper publishing. The course will be lead by the Rory Wilson (CEO of Juta Group) and Francis Mdlongwa (Director of the Sol Plaatjie Institute).

This seminar is intended for newspaper managers - new, not so new, and aspirants - who are willing to invest a week of their time to take a critical look at their capabilities and their jobs. The course will not seek to turn the newspaper manager into a Jack Of All Trades but will put each participant into the shoes of his or her departmental chiefs. In other words, it will give participants the chance to learn what makes their colleagues and subordinates tick.

Case studies will be employed to demonstrate and examine the flaws and foibles of our contemporaries in this challenging business of newspaper publishing. The course will provide participants with insights and practical skills to help them make direct interventions in their newspapers.
