Mondi Shanduka Newspaper Awards - Call for entries reminder
In its continued effort to recognise and reward newspaper journalists who have sought to dig deeper and uncover more than meets the eye, the 8th annual Mondi Shanduka Newspaper Awards is calling for entries. The deadline for entries is March 3, 2009. [Extended to 6 March 2006]
All journalists and photographers in the press may enter, irrespective of whether they serve a national or community-based newspaper. Entries must consist of material originated and published in a South African daily or weekly newspaper during the period of January 1, 2008, and January 1, 2009.

1. Hard news
2. Analysis and commentary
3. Feature writing
4. Investigative journalism
5. Creative journalism
6. Graphic journalism
7. Popular journalism
8. News photographs
9. Feature photographs
10. Sports photographs - new category
11. Presentation (layout and design)
From among the entries, the judges may also award the South African Story of the Year and South African Newspaper Journalist of the Year.
Nominations are also welcome for the Alan Kirkland Soga Achievement Award, a prize that honours a person's sustained and exceptional contribution to South African newspaper journalism.
The reward
A Mondi Shanduka Newspaper Premier Award of R15,000 cash, an iconic Mondi Shanduka nib trophy and a certificate.
The judges
This year boasts a 14-strong judging panel convened by Professor Guy Berger, head of journalism and media studies at Rhodes University. The panel comprises Ebbe Dommisse, Salie de Swardt, Alf Kumalo, Joyce Sikhakhane, Caroline Southey, Kaizer Nyatsumba, Ivan Fynn, John Dludlu, Phil Mtimkulu, Martie Meiring, Obed Musi and Judy Mayet.

Judging will take place in April and the winners will be announced at an event hosted by Mondi Shanduka Newsprint and the Newspaper Association of South Africa at the Wanderers Club on May6, 2009..
