"The winning entry could truly be said to be worth a thousand words as, in one frame, it said so much about the madness of xenophobia. The inclusion in the shot of children laughing mockingly at an older woman refugee from the other side of a red fence adds a poignancy and despair about the next generation," said the judges.
Chris Collingridge has worked as a press photographer in South Africa since 1994. He worked for the Sunday Times & Business Day before working in Central & West Africa as a freelance photographer for foreign media including the Associated Press, The Boston Globe & The Christian Science Monitor. He is currently the Chief Photographer at The Star newspaper.
